Taking his advice seriously I went to several acting classes just to check out how things work there and what my chances of joining some of them are. The first was Anupam Kher’s-Actor Prepares. Golghar in Patna

My next visit was the famous Golghar in Patna, which was also known as the round house because of its round shape and was located on the western side of the Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Basically the purpose of that round house was that it had served as the granary during the British times and was built by Captain John Garstin in the year 1786. The place was situated in the middle of the city; one could use any mode of transportation for reaching that destination. I could easily see that the place drew lots of tourists and visitors and there was a field surrounding the Golghar. There was a rich history behind the design and establishment of such a massive structure in proper Patna city. The Golghar had a height of 29 metres and was designed with a diameter of 125 meter, which was really big and huge.

There was a dangerous and devastating famine in the year 1770 during which nearly 10 million people were killed in the entire region of Bengal, Bangladesh (present day) and Bihar. Warren Hastings was the Governor General of the country at that time and had ordered to construct the beehive styled massive structure which helped in storing grains and other food items for the British Army. It was constructed by John Garstin who was the then Engineer under the East India Company. It had the capacity to store one hundred and forty thousand tons of food grains. The entire structure was completed in the year 1786. It was only a few years back that the present government had taken the initiative to improve and change the appearance of the structure.

The structure was used as a food grain store house even till date. The structure was never filled to its capacity because of its round shape. There were many paintings and other historical pictures available at the Golghar which belonged to the 18th and 19th centuries. After a tiring day, I decided to end my trip for the day and headed towards the hotel.

Ancient Remains in Kumhrar Patna

I started my tour for the second day by visiting the ancient Kumhrar Patna which was famous for its remains. It was situated five kilometres away from the Patna railway station. The place was well-connected via roads and located at a prime location. It was famous for the archaeological and historical remains during the time of Mauryan emperors, between 322 BC and 185 BC. The place was discovered to have the ruins of 80 pillared hall rooms which resembled the hypostyle. There were lots of excavations made after that discovery and the details were revealed after they were studied carefully. The place was also famous for being the ancient capital of Ajatshatru.  It was famous for around four different decades when the place was ruled by various kings. Apart from that, it was surrounded by many other ancient places. It has been a great tourist spot mainly because of its rich historical connections.

There was the famous assembly hall that had 80 pillars and was found in the year 1912 to 1915 A.D. The place was also famous because of the different kinds of excavations that were carried out by Mr. D B Spooner. Though they could determine only 72 pits but they marked the place where the pillars originally stood. It was done by a subsequent excavation team headed by K P Jaiswal which was finished in the year1955.

The Kumhrar Patna was also famous for the Arogya Vihar, which was a foundation that was excavated during that period. There was the Anand Bihar along with a temple, which was extremely famous in those times, i.e. the Durakhi Devi Temple. All the excavation sites were extremely famous and made me feel curious about the rich history and lifestyle followed in those times. I wished to stay for a few more hours but had planned to cover other destinations as well. From there I headed towards the newly built Patna City centre, which was designed to showcase brilliance and consisted of different brands and other showrooms.

Art and Crafts of Bastar Chhattisgarh – Incredible Artistry of India!

After my historic visit to Kailash Caves, I wanted to experience the culture and tradition of the place. During my last visit to Chhattisgarh, I was excited as well as glad. Once again I had managed to make some time out from my busy schedule. This time my sole intention was to explore the art and crafts of the Bastar region of the state. The intricacy of handwork is known all over India and a few of the works are also exported to foreign countries on demand. As I went deep into the different forms of art and crafts the state produced through skilled artisans, I was swept off. The people of Bastar region depend upon these handworks for their livelihood. Apart from crafts and arts, jewelry and painting on palm leaves is yet another attraction seen here.

The simplest form of arts was too mesmerizing and I wanted to explore the complex forms as well and learn about it more and more. I tried to talk with some local people there who gave me detailed description about the various form of handicrafts made there. Using brass and bronze, bell metal is hollow cast into handicrafts which are commonly known as Dhokra in their language. Loha Shilp is yet another form of craft. Scrap iron is used to make toys, deities and figurines of Gods and Goddesses. Godna art is a form of making tattoo motifs on the textiles. This is the work usually done by the women of the village. Handicrafts are also made on cotton fabric. A special kind of thread called ‘Kosa’ is found here with which different crafts are made. The prints on saris are generally done with vegetable extracts which never fades away. I bought some Chhattisgarh Kosa saris for my mom. Apart from all these works, I also learnt that handicrafts were also in the form of wooden carvings, printing, ornaments, tumba and bamboo work.
